The legendary Aegis of Champions is up for grabs again as DOTA 2's most prestigious tournament, The International, returns for its 13th edition to round out the yearly competitive season. The highlight of the DOTA 2 esports calendar, TI13, officially kicks off on September 4 and culminates on September 15 for the Grand Final.

The International, aka TI13, brings 16 of the world's best DOTA 2 teams to Copenhagen, Denmark, competing for a slice of the $2.3 million prize pool. TI is known for its unpredictability, with a new winner crowned almost every year. The International in 2023 was won by Team Spirit, who ended Gaimin Gladiators' near-perfect season.

Here's everything you need to know about TI13, including the format, schedule, and current standings.

DOTA 2 TI13: Format

Unlike TI12, The International's 13th annual iteration is split into three main phases. The Group Stage and following Seeding Deciders will determine the order in which the top 16 teams will play out the "Main Event."

The Road to The International consists of the first two phases and the opening matches of the Playoffs. The International itself consists of the top eight in the Playoffs.

Read below for the full format breakdown for The International 2024:

Group Stage (September 4 - 5)

  • Four groups of four teams in each (A, B, C, and D).
  • All matches are Bo2.
  • All teams qualify for the Seeding Decider.

Seeding Decider (September 6 - 7)

  • Sixteen teams play eight Bo3 head-to-head matches to determine their bracket placements.
  • The top team from Group A picks an opponent from Group B (either 3rd or 4th) to determine who plays the Upper Bracket.
  • This is repeated across each group (Group B winner against Group A 3rd/4th, Group A 2nd vs. remaining Group B 3rd/4th, etc).

Main Event (Playoffs: September 8 - 10. Finals Weekend: September 14 - 15)

  • Sixteen teams compete in a double-elimination bracket.
  • Eight teams directly begin in the Upper Bracket, while eight are in The International Lower Bracket.
  • The Grand Final is Bo5, while all other series' are Bo3.

DOTA 2 TI13: Venue & Live Streams

While TI12 returned to its ancestral roots, TI13 will jet across to Denmark in 2024. The Road to The International games will be played offline. The Finals Weekend will be hosted at Copenhagen's Royal Arena before a live audience. Tickets for the tournament are still available, so grab 'em while you can!

If you can't attend the live event, the DOTA 2 TI 2024 will be broadcast live on Twitch with primary, secondary, tertiary, quaternary, and quinary streams. These are available to accommodate matches happening at the same time. Spoiler-free VODs will be posted on the official DOTA 2 YouTube channel. For other countries and languages, there is a list of alternate broadcasters on The International's Liquidpedia page.

DOTA 2 TI13: Prize Pool

Like other top-tier DOTA tournaments, The International is historically known for its vast prize pool, as it's typically one of the largest in the esports scene. However, as of 2023, Valve has decided to make a landmark decision to cut back on crowdfunding The International's prize pool through the player-bought battle pass, the Compendium. A quarter of the player's purchase goes directly to funding The International, with Valve throwing in $1.6 million to bulk up the final cash prize.

The prize pool for TI13 is currently around $2.3 million, with the lion's share going to the tournament winner. This is a record low for this prestigious tournament, with many long-time DOTA 2 fans expressing their discontent about the direction DOTA 2 esports is headed. Regardless, it will be interesting to see the final jackpot for The International 2024!
